NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
Nyerere National Park, better known as Selous Game Reserve, is the largest national park in Tanzania. It covers an area of 30.893 km 2 . The park is located in the south-east of Tanzania and lies about 230 km by road from the capital Dar Es Salaam, at Mtemere Gate.
Only in 2019 it has obtained the status as a national park and changed its name from Selous to Nyerere, in honour of Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania.
The entire area is untouched by human hand. It is one of the wildest and most incontaminated areas left in Africa. It offers a broad variety of natural habitats with open grasslands, swamp areas and rain forests. The Selous represents a true stronghold for the African wild dog and hosts a big amount of animals of the savannah such as elephants, buffalos, lions, impala, kudu, baboons and giraffes.
The park is crossed by the Rufiji, the biggest river in Tanzania, which runs up to the Indian Ocean and hosts
coccodriles, hippos and a wide range of birds. Visitors will enjoy many different types of Safaris: standard safari, walking safari with a ranger and above all boat safari. The park is infact one of the few places in Tanzania where it is possible to navigate the river. This unique
experience offers a full immersion into the wild.
The Mikumi National Park is a protected natural area in central eastern Tanzania; it is crossed by the road that connects Dar Es Salaam and Iringa and borders with the Nyerere National Park and the Udzungwa National Park. The 3 parks form an excellent, varied and pleasant safari circuit, less beaten by international tourism and more protected from an environmental point of view.
The Mikumi National Park is also the most accessible from Dar Es Salaam, it therefore is the ideal safari destination for those short on time.
The Mikumi landscape is often compared to that of the Serengeti where most visitors come with the aim of spotting the “Big Five” (leopards, lions, elephants, buffalos and rhinos) but there are many other species of animals such as zebras, gnu, impala, spotted hyena, baboons and kudu.
The National Park of Udzungwa Mountains is located in the Region of Morogoro, in the south-center of Tanzania and near the Mikumi, Selous and Ruaha National Parks. It’s a mountain park wedged within the chain of mountains of the same name and it is crossed by two important rivers: the Ruaha river, namegiving to the park and Kilombero river.
The park can be explored by foot with a long trekking that leads up to the Sonjo waterfalls. They cover an over 270 meters hight and at the foot of the falls you may swim in a natural pool. It is unique in Tanzania for the numbers of primates. In fact it hosts 11 different species: colobo of Angola, yellow baboon, vervet of the diademin addiction to other endemic species.
In recent years, a new species of elephant - shrew has been discovered, the Rhynchicyon Udzungwensis.
Ruaha National Park was established in 1964 and is the first natural park in Tanzania by extension.
Located in the very heart of Tanzania, near the city of Iringa, it offers visitors an uncrowded glimpse of pristine Africa with a great diversity of wildlife, birds and landscapes.
The park takes its name from Great Ruaha River which offers shelter to a larhe number of crocodiles and hippos and which during the dry season ( between May and October) attracts large numbers of animals including lions, leopards, wild dogs, impalas, antelopes and giraffes, that gather around the available water sources and are therefore easy to spot.
Due to its vast size and the fact that it houses only a few exclusive luxury camps within it, the Ruaha National Park is the perfect destination for lovers of savannah animals who want to escape the crowds and experience Africa in all its wild nature.
The Other Park
SERENGETI
The most beautiful in Africa (they say). Huge herds of predators and prey crossing rivers overrun by crocodiles. The park is the setting of the utmost famous and spectacular “Great Migration”.
TARANGIRE
The homonymous watercourse crosses this park and divides it in two. Tarangire is the ideal destination to observe herds of elephants while serveral baobab trees frame the park.
NGORONGORO
The huge crater is home to an incredible amount of animals including the famous “Big Five”: elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos and rhinos. The show continues with zebras, gnu, ienas and a huge variety of birds including eagles, hawks and pink flamingos.
LAKE MANYARA
Is a huge green environment, where more than half of the park is occupied by the lake and the rest by the forest. During the green rainy season, the lake hosts thousands of flamingos.
